An Artist's Statement is supposed to show the inspirations for my style and give my thoughts
about the Meaning of my work. Unfortunately, I don't mean for my work to have Meaning. Glass
is FUN! It's the most incredible substance: first it's hot and liquid and glowing, and it's fun to play
with, the way soft clay is. Then it becomes hard and clear--the process is like magic. These
properties are the only things that inspire my work--I either think "that would be so much fun to
make!" or "that would look so cool with the light coming through it!," so I make it. I love the
colors you can get with glass (another bit of magic: all the colors are orange and opaque when
they're hot, then, when the piece has cooled, there are transparent colors!), so I design most
of my stuff to have jewel-tones. Glass has a wonderful heft, so I make things that feel nice to
hold in your hand. And, I confess, I like cute things, so much of my work is cute and friendly.
Really that's all there is to it.
